Stop Being Intimidated!

Stop being intimidated

I’m a pretty big fan of at-home workouts. I used to be a gym goer but was so intimidated by the weight section that I NEVER went over there, like ever.  Even though I knew it would be good for me, I stayed away because I didn’t know where to start.   When I got into weight lifting at home I quickly realized that there really isn’t that much to be intimidated by – I wish I had just asked for some help years ago. It would have saved so much energy and time.

Maybe you love the gym (I, personally, will never go back to paying that monthly fee and having to commute to and from what was usually a pretty stinky place, lol), but you’re still hooked on cardio simply because you’re nervous about the weight section.  I want to encourage you to step OUT of your comfort zone and ask for help.  We are all beginners at some point; it’s ok to not know anything.  It’s ok to ask for help so you don’t injure yourself.   If you have to hire a personal trainer for a session or two to help you figure it out, then DO IT.  Trust me, you’ll waste more money in membership fees not getting the results you want if you don’t get help.

Don’t let being a beginner intimidate you. Own it. Work it. Then, you’ll lose it.

What to Expect from Shaun T & INSANITY®

Insanity Challenge Pack INcludesYou’ve probably seen those infomercials for INSANITY® – who hasn’t? The ads and the name really drives home the idea that these exercises are, well, insane. Before you get too intimidated, I’d like to tell you what to expect from Shaun T & Insanity by giving you a more beginner-friendly perspective on this body transforming, life-changing program.

What Makes These Workouts “Insane”?

The Max Interval Training structure of the workouts is what most people find crazy. Going against the norm, INSANITY® requires you to do intense and demanding workouts for longer intervals, take very short breaks, and then jump right back into another long interval of exercise.

This type of training is difficult to get used to, to say the least. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t take the workouts at your own pace. The point of these demanding intervals is to push your body to its limit and get the best results possible in the shortest amount of time. According to the Insanity website, people have burned as many as 1,000 calories in an hour by doing these extreme routines.

How Will You Feel?

You are going to feel the results from the program from day one. Your muscles will definitely feel sore, but each day focuses on a different muscle group, so you are able to continue. As with any workout, the longer you stick with the program, the more stamina, energy and endurance you will have.

Who Will Like this Program?

Even though it is extremely challenging, people consistently call INSANITY® one of their favourite workouts, if not the best. Is it because these people are insane?

Getting the Right Nutrition to Support Your Workouts

Getting the Right Nutrition to Support Your Workouts

It’s tempting to think that you should eat less and exercise more when trying to lose weight. This can be a dangerous thought process, as your body needs fuel to not only lose weight, but to function properly.
What foods should you eat if you want to get the right nutrition to support your workouts?

Proteins

Protein is particularly important for your muscles. Your muscles need protein in order to strengthen and repair after a workout. Whether you are interested in improving your muscle tone or mass, or if you want to experience shorter periods of soreness after your workouts, you need protein.

“Good” Carbs

Carbohydrates give you the energy you need to keep exercising. There have been plenty of popular diets that might have scared you away from carbs. In reality, there are carbs you should avoid, but there are also good carbs that make for great fitness fuel.

As explained by WebMD, the bad carbs are often in processed foods like white rice and white bread, while good carbs are foods that are high in fiber: vegetables like sweet potatoes and fruits.

Water

Do not wait until you are thirsty to drink. Keep yourself well hydrated before, during and after your workout session. Most people do not incorporate enough water in their everyday diet, and the body needs even more hydration when you exercise.

When you do not get enough water, you can see your heart rate increase, your energy levels can drop, and you might develop a headache or an increase in body temperature. You will feel better, be able to workout longer, and see improved results from your workouts if your body has plenty of water.

4 Instant Energy Tips

4 Instant energy tips

As a mom, I almost always feel zapped of energy on some level. Diapers, meals, snacks, potty, laundry, work, house, phone, snacks, meals….you know! I still have a mental check-list I run through on days when I’m really struggling to get (and stay) going. While it may be normal to feel run ragged at the end of a long day, struggling with energy all day is not normal. My 4 instant energy tips:

Get More Sleep

If I’ve gotten less than 7 hours, I’m zapped. Quick fix? Skip the T.V. and reading and go to bed earlier. Even 30-45 minutes makes a huge difference. For me personally, it never works to head to bed at the same time and just skip my morning workout by hitting snooze! Catch up on the front end.

Eat A Healthy Breakfast

Some days it’s 10 a.m. and I realize I’ve been up since 5:30, worked out and still not eaten. It’s difficult for me to recover on these days. Best I can do is to eat ASAP and wait it out until the next day. Skipping breakfast, or not eating a well balanced breakfast will zap your energy every time!

Workout

People don’t workout because they are tired. They are tired because they don’t workout. It’s a vicious cycle. Yes, the first couple of days are going to suck! But sooner than later, a short workout will help you feel more energized every day. Even 20 to 25 minutes!

Drink More Water

According to a study in The Journal of Nutrition, women who experience even mild dehydration saw significant drops in energy levels. Carry a water bottle with you at all times. You’ll sip unconsciously on it all day! If you’ve been dehydrated, drink up and your fog will lift.

Get Fit By Making Time, Not Excuses

 pink bikini mom

Everyone wants to be in great physical shape, but no one seems to have the time to get to the gym, go running, or get in a good workout. “I’m just so busy!” I hear all the time. Heck, I say it some times! But look at the people you know who are in great shape. Do they magically have extra time in their days that you don’t? Nope. They have jobs, social lives, and kids, just like you, but they find the time. How do they do it?

Find Something You Love

Just joining the gym or signing up for a 5k won’t get you where you want to be. You have to really commit to doing something active every day. How can you do that if you hate going to the gym or you’d rather eat raw earthworms than go for a run? Why not sign up for a spin class instead? Or order a workout program like P90X3 or T25 that you can do at home? Whatever you do, make sure it’s something that appeals to you and that you enjoy doing. You’ll be much more likely to stick to a workout that you look forward to.

Get It Done

Don’t wait until the end of the day, when you’re tired out from work to exercise. You’ll have a ton of stuff at home to distract you, and you know how hard it can be to get back up off the couch once you sit down. Instead, get up just 45 minutes early every day. This will give you time to go for a 30 minute run or bike ride or do a short at-home workout, like T25, before you shower and get ready for work.

Make Fitness a Lifestyle

If you want to get fit and stay fit, you aren’t just going to workout for a few months and stop. Fitness and health are a lifelong journey. If you make diet and exercise a priority in your life, you’ll see major results. And you can do it in ways you never even thought of, like parking at the far end of the lot when you go to work or the store. Anything you do on a daily basis that adds motion to your routine will burn calories and keep you fit.

Get Fit in 5 Minutes

Get fir in 5 minutes

I know what you’re thinking. Get fit in 5 minutes. It sounds too good to be true. Getting fit and healthy takes a lot more than five minutes, or everyone would look like fitness models. Well, you’re right. It does take more than a few minutes, but you can make huge improvements in your health and fitness with 5-minute workout breaks throughout the day.

I’m not talking about going for a 5-minute run or getting all suited up for just 5 minutes on a bicycle. I’m talking about adding activity to your day in 5-minute increments. Here are some great tips that won’t feel like you’re adding any extra effort to your day, but will add up quickly for better fitness and weight loss. Yipee!

Stand Up

If you work in an office, you may have to sit down for most of the day. However, it’s been proven time and again that standing up and moving around helps with circulation and weight loss. Whenever you get a call at your desk, stand up to take it. While you’re on the phone, do a couple of lunges and/or squats before you sit back down to loosen your legs and build muscle. Sounds silly, but those few minutes start adding up quickly!

Walk It Out

Instead of heading straight for the break room for a cup of coffee at your mid-morning break time, take a walk around the building. As you stretch your legs and get your heart rate up, you’ll feel more awake and alert. Do the same thing in the afternoon. In fact, whenever you get stuck on a problem or just need to clear your head, take a walk. This adds to your movement throughout the day and keeps your metabolism engaged.

Work Those Arms

If you Google “5 minute arms workout”, you’ll find tons of results that take only 5 minutes to complete for firmer, more toned arms. Repeat one of these activities a couple times every day, and you’ll notice your arms start to get more toned. Hello Summer!

Avoid Cardio Mistakes For a Better Workout

Avoid cardio mistakes for a better workoutdHave you ever paid attention to the other people on the treadmills, elliptical machines, and spin bikes at the gym? You’ll notice a few bad habits that distract from a good, focused workout and keep you from making the progress you want. Keep an eye out for these and avoid them for the best workout possible.

Zoning Out

Chances are, if you’re jogging slow enough to read a magazine, you’re not getting much out of your workout. If you’re really focused on your arm and leg movements and really pushing yourself, you won’t be able to keep track of words on a page. Don’t get distracted by a magazine or book while you’re running or cycling, and if you’re watching TV, make sure that you don’t get too engrossed in it. Instead, bring your phone or iPod with you and stack it with a really motivational playlist that will keep you focused on breathing and moving.

Holding On

This is especially true for treadmills and elliptical machines. Just because there’s a handrail, that doesn’t mean you should be holding on. For the most part, unless the grips are built into moving parts of the machine designed to help you get a better full-body workout, then you shouldn’t be holding them. They’re there to let you check your heart rate between intervals or to catch yourself should you lose your balance. They’re not there as a crutch to hold onto.

Averting Your Eyes

Most gyms have full mirrors on the walls. This isn’t just to let vane gym junkies check themselves out. It’s actually a service to you while you workout. Check your posture. Are you running with a swayback? Are you favoring one foot over the other? Even if you aren’t a big fan of looking at yourself in the mirror, check these things every now and then. As you correct them and focus on your workouts, you’ll find that you don’t mind what you see in the mirror so much anymore.

Searching For Skinny Instead of Fit

Fit Feels So Much Better Than SkinnyMost girls are aware at a very young age that “skinny” is better than “fat.” I felt “fat” through my awkward years (I insist I was over weight, my mom says it was just a “stage”). As I entered my late teens I began a quest for that perfect skinny feeling. I gained and lost weight through out college and my early twenties. The weight loss was always achieved by counting calories, going hungry, and jogging as much as I could. I thought that was what I was supposed to do to stay healthy. I thought eventually it would make me feel confident in my own skin.

It never did.

By my mid-20’s, I accepted that “searching for skinny” was just a perpetual state of living for women. I assumed it would never feel good enough, comfortable enough, thin enough. The top photo in the collage above was at my wedding – I felt beautiful. The dress fit. If you had asked me, I probably would have said 5 more pounds less would have made me feel just right. Truth is, it probably wouldn’t have been “enough.”

The bottom left photo is 3 months post-partum with my second son, and just under the heaviest I’ve been in my life – 170ish pounds. After seeing that picture I decided it was time to get back to my skinny quest, and boy did I! I got my butt into gear, starting eating ONLY 1200 calories a day, doing cardio until I was blue in the face, and struggling with exhaustion, fatigue, hunger, and two babies. I lost weight and plateaued at the weight in the middle, bottom image. My pants still didn’t button, and I was far from comfortable in my skin. I accepted that my body would just be different after having kids because after 2 months at a plateau, I wasn’t seeing any changes.

Enter my friend (and now Beachbody Coach), Tiffany. We actually met on Facebook in a mommy support group. She invited me to join her online fitness support group and give P90X a try. I was incredibly bored with my cardio and figured I had nothing to lose. Let me tell you, I had NO expectation that it would change my body that much. During the 90 days of P90X I committed to:

1. Eating as clean as possible, sticking very close to a Paleo diet
2. Letting go of counting calories and recording every single bite I ate (oh this was scary and FREEING all at the same time)
3. Getting in all the workouts, no matter how much I had to modify them

As you can see, 90 days later my body was completely transformed. Guess what, the scale said I was only 3 pounds lighter! Yep, that’s ONLY 3 pound difference, AND (get this) about one size BIGGER than I was on my wedding day. Shocked, I realized that for the first time in my life I felt like it was “good enough” … in fact it was GREAT. I felt amazing in my clothes, cared less about what size was on the tag, and basically threw out my scale.

All those years, I was seeking FIT, not skinny. I didn’t know how to get there, or what it was called. Having been on the quest for both, let me tell you FIT is so much better and so much more FUN. It feels amazing and it’s always good ENOUGH.

3 Ways to Lose Weight the Quick and Healthy Way

 fruit bowl

Losing weight and getting fit takes effort. If it was fast and easy, everyone would do it, but it doesn’t have to take as much time or effort as you might think. If you make a few tweaks and small changes to your lifestyle, you’ll be surprised how quickly you see improvements.

1. Switch Up at Happy Hour

Instead of meeting up with your friends for drinks after work or having a glass of wine at home, which can pack on excess calories in a hurry, why not go for a walk or run? Invite your friends to join you and/or bring your kids along. That way you’re adding exercise to your afternoon routine and avoiding calorie packed alcoholic beverages.

2. Commit to 25 Minutes Every Day

It can be all too easy to skip a workout, especially when you think you have to commit to an hour or more. If you tell yourself that you’ll do just 25 minutes every day, you’ll be ahead of the curve. If you’re tempted to skip, just tell yourself, “It’s just 25 minutes. Netflix…kids…dinner…laundry can wait for 25 minutes.” You’ll find, once you make this commitment, that you’ll often do more than 25 minutes, as you get caught up in working out and enjoying your results. On days when you’re feeling tired or out of it, you still get 25 minutes in to feel good about. If you can’t get outside, check out Focus T25, P90X3, or 21 Day Fix for workouts that are 30 minutes or less.

3. Drink Water and Eat Your Veggies

When you’re dehydrated, it’s easy to mistake thirst for hunger. To combat this, drink plenty of water. Keep a water bottle with you so that it’s convenient for you to drink at least 64 ounces of water every day. At the same time, when you get a snack attack, reach for fresh fruits and vegetables. They’re high in fiber, water, and will make you feel full for long periods of time without packing on a ton of calories.
