Going From Fit To Fat – 10 Truths I Had Forgotten About Weight Loss

Going From Fit To Fat – 10 Truths I Had Forgotten About Weight Loss

pre baby

When you’re fit and living a fit & healthy life, you start to forget what it’s like to be at the beginning – out of shape, over weight, sad, in a hurry….  Sure, you can verbalize it and say all the right things, but the memory of the FEELING starts to fade until you can’t even really recall it any more.  Since having baby #3 and struggling to get back into shape and lose weight, I’ve been humbled a LOT.

Whether you have 25 pounds or 100 pounds to lose, I think most of these are true:

1.  It’s hard to remember every bite of food counts when you have such a long way to go.  Honestly, it seems like one biscuit or one cookie really isn’t going to make a huge difference at this point because I have so far to go.  Not logical at all, but still what I think (and they taste sooo good in the moment).

2.  Really getting into working out is near impossible because I can’t do most of the workout.  The awesome feeling of killing a workout is missing from my life right now because even though I have great intentions when I start, I get tired and lose momentum quickly.

3.  Fighting too small clothes all of the time is DEPRESSING.  I know, I know you’re going to say “You just had a baby!”  Well, not exactly “just” any more and even so it doesn’t change the feeling of not having anything to wear that I feel good in.

4.  Being over weight and out of shape makes me tired.  It’s much easier not to try during the day because I’m tired. I know that just perpetuates the cycle.  Knowing and changing…two very different things.

5.  Willpower is like a muscle.  I’ve not been good about working this muscle out.  It’s HARD to start at “will power zero” and build up to where I need to be to see progress.

6.   Bad food tastes good, especially when I’m tired.  I know bad food makes me more tired, yet I still find myself eating it.

7.   It truly is about choosing my “hard.”  This journey is HARD.  Giving up is hard too.  Being over weight is hard.  It’s all hard.

8.  Making small changes every day (taking those “baby steps”) feels futile.  I’ve given that advice thousands of times to people – “just take baby steps.”  What makes more sense to me now is a complete over haul because baby steps don’t yield results fast enough for me to want to keep going.

9.  The ol’ stand by “give it time!” is annoying!  I don’t want to give it time! I want to see some changes right now.  Actually, I want to see them yesterday.

10.   The mental dialogue is loud and proud.  “You’re too tired. You just had a baby. IT doesn’t matter right now.  Everything is more important than your weight loss. Today isn’t going to change anything.  This workout is too hard.  That cake is too good.”  Shew!  I need to change this big time.  One thought at a time.

Maybe some of these are true for you, maybe they aren’t.  All I know is that right now I want to eat the cake that’s in our freezer for a snack, but I’m going to fight the urge to use sugar for a quick energy source.

I will get there, and so will you.  You just have to promise yourself you won’t give up no matter how tough life is today or how long it takes or how many set backs you have.  This set back could be the start of a great come back.
