8 Habits of the Super Healthy

8 habits of the super healthy

Wonder what it is exactly that your super fit friend does every day that is working for her? She’s actually doing many small things every day to keep herself on track. Try adding one or two of these habits a week, get the hang of them, and then add on. In no time you’ll be fitter, leaner, and healthier. Here 8 habits of the super healthy:

1. Change your attitude about exercise. It’s a privilege to have the ability to workout, and many do not have this privilege. Stay positive about your workouts and you’ll start to enjoy them more.
2. Keep your eye on the ball by setting very short-term goals like: workout 4 times this week, eat two healthy snacks today, etc.
3. Make a conscious effort to do a little bit more during every single workout.
4. On the days you don’t do a full fledged workout, do something active like walking or stretching to keep your body active.
5. Prep for your workout the night before. Lay out your shoes, workout clothes, and water/snack. Put the DVD in the TV or your purse by the door. People busier than you make time to workout. You can to it.
6. Get an accountability partner – not only will it help keep you on track, but you’ll love the feeling of being part of someone else’s journey.
7. Keep your routine fresh. Doing the same thing over and over is a recipe for quitting. Programs like Beachbody offers will change it up effectively so that you don’t get bored but still see results.
8. Keep in mind that portion control matters – even if you are only eating whole foods. Too many calories will stall progress and frustrate you!

Easy peasy lemon squeezy!

Find Healthy For You

Find Healthy for You

With Pinterest and social media today it’s easy to think that there are only two options: obesity or extreme fitness. Why aren’t there more images and examples of moms who want to fall somewhere in between those two extremes? What’s really important is finding healthy for you. Where do I fit into this as a mom who just wants to be healthy but not necessarily have 14% body fat?

I fit in here:

I don’t eat healthy foods because I want to be skinny, or because I’m attached to some ideological diet, or because I want to be better than someone else.

I eat healthy because I actually feel better when I do….yes, so much so that it’s usually not hard to turn down junk because I know how I’ll feel right after I eat it. Bloated, sinus drainage, groggy, bleh.

I’m not perfect. I eat processed junk and have to be reminded how yucky I feel when I do eat it. Some times it’s worth it.

I love feeling fit and strong. Skinny is not the goal.

I’m a better mom, wife, friend, daughter, sister, mentor when I take care of myself.

I don’t care about having a 6 pack as much as I care about having balance, feeling good in my clothes, and rocking some confidence.

I want to set a good example for my kids. They may not eat brussel sprouts now but maybe if they see me eating them for long enough, they will try them one day,

I share my journey with you because I believe that it’s OK to not want to be a body builder or fitness competitor with cut arms and a perfectly round booty (if that’s your goal though, hello awesome!). It’s ok to not be a size 2. It’s ok to just want to be healthy, have balance, and be you.

Meal Replacement Shakes

Meal replacement shake

I think everyone knows I drink Shakeology daily, even while pregnant. I’ve loved it daily for over 2 years now. But do you know why? My meal replacement shake is my daily dose of dense nutrition, vitamins, and minerals that I don’t otherwise get in my diet. I love it because it keeps me full, satisfies my sweet tooth, and gives me energy to keep up with my boys (and soon, baby girl too). It’s an easy, fast, healthy addition to my crazy routine; like a vitamin that’s just part of my life. It’s just yummier, all natural, and more easily digested than the little pills you buy at the store.

I don’t use it to avoid eating real food, or as a reason not to continue learning about the importance of fueling my body with whole food. It does not REPLACE real, wholesome, healthy foods. I’ve learned how to eat healthy through the Beachbody nutrition guides, researching and studying on my own.

Any meal replacement shake will assist with weight loss if it’s accompanied by an overall reduction in calories. No shake magically causes weight loss in and of itself, and the loss will be short lived if you don’t learn how to eat well and nourish your body long term. I trust Shakeology because I know it’s all natural and free of artificial ingredients, soy, gluten, and sugar. As long as you know what you are putting into your body and recognize that it’s part of a bigger picture, not a short cut to skinny – I think that using a meal replacement shake as a supplement to a healthy lifestyle is A-ok!

Fit Habits for Busy Mom

Fit habits for busy moms

Given that moms are usually everything to everybody, it’s no wonder it’s a struggle to take care of ourselves. Here are some simple, realistic fit habits for busy moms – ways you can be healthier on a daily basis by making small changes, one day at a time.

Write Down Your Workouts

Make a brand new workout schedule every single week. Not only will it keep you more motivated, but it will make it more difficult for you to not show up. I prefer using my iCalendar and setting alerts to go off when it’s time to push play. In the big scheme of my day, 30-45 minutes is not that much time to take away from other things and people and I get so much out of it. Worth it!

Prep Healthy Food Ahead of Time

Keep your diet on track by washing, slicing, and dicing veggies and fruits ahead of time. If they are ready to eat in the refrigerator and ready to grab for meals on the go, your diet will stay on track. My favorite foods to prep ahead of time are: carrots, celery, berries, grapes (great when frozen in the summer time!), hard-boiled eggs, pre-measured nuts, bell peppers, and grapefruit. I also bake chicken breasts and make some homemade mayo to have for chicken and egg salad.

Eliminate All or Most Refined Sugar

This probably seems like a no brainer, but it’s the simplest way to dramatically improve your health quickly, lose weight faster, and feel better sooner. Read your labels, drink only water, and limit take out & fast food.

Avoid BLT’s From Your Child’s Plate

Ohhh those bites, licks, and tastes! BLT’s add up quickly and are so mindless that it’s hard to even know they are happening before it’s too late. If you find yourself ravenous during your kiddos’ meal/snack time, grab some prepped snacks out of your refrigerator and eat mindfully. Just because you grab a bite while clearing their plates, doesn’t mean it doesn’t count. Don’t sabotage your diet unconsciously, that’s just not fun!

4 Easy Ways to Slim Down for Summer Without Dieting

4 Easy Ways to Slim Down For Summer without dieting

With the season of shorts, swimsuits, and sundresses fast approaching, you might be wondering what the heck you’re gonna do to drop a few pounds and feel great in your clothes ASAP.

Use these 4 easy ways to slim down for summer without dieting!

1. Focus On Reducing Night Time Snacking.

Instead of obsessing over total calories, just close the kitchen after dinner. You’ll cut your daily caloric intake without number crunching. Try drinking hot tea or ice water with lemon to keep you mind and mouth occupied and your tummy feeling full.

2. Include One Fruit & One Veggie At Every Meal.

As soon as you start thinking about removing something “bad” from your diet, you’ll probably start wanting it even more. Focus on adding in the good and eating it first, not taking out the bad. Chances are you’ll end up eating less unhealthy foods because you’ll be full and satisfied by the healthy stuff!

3. Sneak In Activity Without Exercise.

Instead of worrying about creating a workout routine from scratch, focus on being more active in general. Play with your kids, park far away from the door of the store, take the stairs, walk to the mail box, ect. Any extra steps you can put into your day will add up big time.

4. Make A Date.

Our social lives tend to revolve around food and drinks. Instead of meeting a friend for drinks, meet her for a walk on a trail or invite her over for a healthy dinner. The more you can include your friends and family, the easier it will be. Plus, the busier you stay doing fun things, the less likely you’re going to be focused on food!

Searching For Skinny Instead of Fit

Fit Feels So Much Better Than SkinnyMost girls are aware at a very young age that “skinny” is better than “fat.” I felt “fat” through my awkward years (I insist I was over weight, my mom says it was just a “stage”). As I entered my late teens I began a quest for that perfect skinny feeling. I gained and lost weight through out college and my early twenties. The weight loss was always achieved by counting calories, going hungry, and jogging as much as I could. I thought that was what I was supposed to do to stay healthy. I thought eventually it would make me feel confident in my own skin.

It never did.

By my mid-20’s, I accepted that “searching for skinny” was just a perpetual state of living for women. I assumed it would never feel good enough, comfortable enough, thin enough. The top photo in the collage above was at my wedding – I felt beautiful. The dress fit. If you had asked me, I probably would have said 5 more pounds less would have made me feel just right. Truth is, it probably wouldn’t have been “enough.”

The bottom left photo is 3 months post-partum with my second son, and just under the heaviest I’ve been in my life – 170ish pounds. After seeing that picture I decided it was time to get back to my skinny quest, and boy did I! I got my butt into gear, starting eating ONLY 1200 calories a day, doing cardio until I was blue in the face, and struggling with exhaustion, fatigue, hunger, and two babies. I lost weight and plateaued at the weight in the middle, bottom image. My pants still didn’t button, and I was far from comfortable in my skin. I accepted that my body would just be different after having kids because after 2 months at a plateau, I wasn’t seeing any changes.

Enter my friend (and now Beachbody Coach), Tiffany. We actually met on Facebook in a mommy support group. She invited me to join her online fitness support group and give P90X a try. I was incredibly bored with my cardio and figured I had nothing to lose. Let me tell you, I had NO expectation that it would change my body that much. During the 90 days of P90X I committed to:

1. Eating as clean as possible, sticking very close to a Paleo diet
2. Letting go of counting calories and recording every single bite I ate (oh this was scary and FREEING all at the same time)
3. Getting in all the workouts, no matter how much I had to modify them

As you can see, 90 days later my body was completely transformed. Guess what, the scale said I was only 3 pounds lighter! Yep, that’s ONLY 3 pound difference, AND (get this) about one size BIGGER than I was on my wedding day. Shocked, I realized that for the first time in my life I felt like it was “good enough” … in fact it was GREAT. I felt amazing in my clothes, cared less about what size was on the tag, and basically threw out my scale.

All those years, I was seeking FIT, not skinny. I didn’t know how to get there, or what it was called. Having been on the quest for both, let me tell you FIT is so much better and so much more FUN. It feels amazing and it’s always good ENOUGH.
