3 Secrets to Getting & Staying Motivating

Set Short Term Goals

Spend time articulating specific goals & set a deadline. “Lose weight by summer” and “be healthy” are too vague. Instead, decide to workout 4 times every or stop eating after dinner for 5 days. If you’re not willing to get serious about picking reasonable, short term goals, then you’re not serious about getting and staying motivated!

Write Down Your Goals

Write down your goals & put them everywhere! On your fridge, phone, tablet, night stand, ect. Read them every single day, all day, and envision what it feels like to accomplish them. Tempted to skip this step? Don’t. Your mind is highly susceptible to “priming” (read the book, Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking, if you don’t believe me), so why not use this chance to prime it with exactly what you want?

Get a Partner

Get an accountability partner that is honest with you, calls you out when you need it, and will keep you on track. Share your goals with her & check in daily, no excuses. I like what’s called “offensive accountability.” That means you don’t have to wait for her to catch you doing something you shouldn’t be, you have to ‘fess up and come clean as soon as it happens.

I have 3 ADDITIONAL Secrets to Getting & Staying Motivated that will help you get to your motivation destination ASAP. Enter your email address into the header above (see it, in black?) and I’ll email you the FREE REPORT. 6 Secrets to Staying Motivated and you’ll be on your way! Getting and staying motivated isn’t effortless. It requires attention and focus, but will get easier over time. Stop waiting for motivation to reign down upon you and go get it for yourself!

You Have To Start Somewhere

You have to start somewhere

When you begin your weight loss and/or fitness journey, it’s easy to feel like your limitations and missteps totally negate your effort. You try a new workout, you only make it 10 minutes before you need a break, so you quit because you think, “how much good is 10 minutes going to do me any way?” If you find yourself in this destructive cycle, STOP. Stop right now.

First, I can relate. When I got pregnant with my third child I was in the best pre-pregnancy shape of my life, much better than with the first two kiddos. I thought that would mean smooth sailing. Wrong! I’ve had more physical limitations and pain with this one than with the other two combined. I’m basically where I described above – 10 minutes into a workout, I have to sit down and take a break. Does that mean I should quit trying? No. 10 minutes of activity here and there is much better for me than no activity what so ever, right?

Second, please realize we are all beginners at one point. Doing anything more than you did yesterday is a step in the right direction. It may feel like a baby step, but it’s still a step. Trust me, the steps will get bigger as you continue but only if you continue. All progress is great progress, no matter how small. Regardless of where you were yesterday, pick it up again today and KEEP GOING. You can’t fail if you don’t quit.

Workout Secrets of the Fit and Healthy

Workout Secrets

When it comes to working out and getting fit and healthy, we can use all the help and tips we can get, right? Well, I have a few for you today that you’ll love as you set out on the journey to wellness and a firm booty.

Consistently Build Endurance

Going from zero exercise to two hours a day on a treadmill is the fast track to burn out, discouragement, boredom, and frustration. In fact, you’re probably going to get hurt if you continue doing that. You need to build your cardiovascular and muscular fitness, as well as your endurance, to be able to complete long and/or strenuous exercise. Doing a little bit every day will help you out a lot more than doing a lot over night. You didn’t gain the weight overnight, it won’t come off over night!

Bring a Buddy

Chances are, you know at least one or two other people in your circle of friends who want to get fit. If not, encourage them to want to be healthier! Why not invite them to go workout with you? You could join the same gym and go workout together, or you could make a pact to send each other motivational messages and pictures for accountability and inspiration. There is no doubt that the ladies in my online 30 Day Slim Down love the buddy system and are much more likely to succeed because of it!

Fit for Life

Make fitness part of your lifestyle, not something you stress about short term. Make changes slowly, not all at once, so that your body gets used to your new habits. If you change one thing per week, you’ll have a whole new, healthy and fit, lifestyle in no time at all. All of your fitness role models didn’t just wake up one morning with a 6 pack, it took time, consistency and dedication to a life style.

Inspiration

When you’re feeling down and unmotivated, do a quick Facebook search for workout and fitness inspirations. Join my support group, or follow me on Facebook . The more you see people getting fit and feeling great, the more you’ll want to keep at it. It starts to get into you subconscious and you won’t be able to keep it out!

Green Grapefruit Smoothie Recipe

Green Smoothie

I’m generally not a green smoothie or green juice fan. I like adding green veggies to my otherwise fruity smoothies or Shakeology, but just greens with a side of green apple is not for me. So call me pregnant (7 months to be exact), but while scrolling/trolling Pinterest the other day I actually had an intense graving for a GREEN smoothie. I followed several links to different blogs but none of them appealed to me (I’m sorry but celery and cucumber and mint blended do NOT excite my palate).

The craving was pretty intense so I decided to wing it with what I had in the house and BOOM! I hit the jackpot and knew I had to share this with you ASAP! This smoothie is just barely sweet, but has no bitter green flavor typically associated with … grass…I mean super green smoothies.

 Grapefruit Green Smoothie

It turned out so lovely I’ve had one every day since. It’s slightly sweet initially (slightly) and then the grapefruit flavor kicks in as an afterthought. Why have I never seen grapefruit in a smoothie recipe before? It’s such a brilliant, wonderful fruit! It’s definitely a must try.

Any way, this is ah-mazing & I highly recommend it if you are new to green smoothies, or like me, just don’t care to acquire the taste of them.

Avoid Cardio Mistakes For a Better Workout

Avoid cardio mistakes for a better workoutdHave you ever paid attention to the other people on the treadmills, elliptical machines, and spin bikes at the gym? You’ll notice a few bad habits that distract from a good, focused workout and keep you from making the progress you want. Keep an eye out for these and avoid them for the best workout possible.

Zoning Out

Chances are, if you’re jogging slow enough to read a magazine, you’re not getting much out of your workout. If you’re really focused on your arm and leg movements and really pushing yourself, you won’t be able to keep track of words on a page. Don’t get distracted by a magazine or book while you’re running or cycling, and if you’re watching TV, make sure that you don’t get too engrossed in it. Instead, bring your phone or iPod with you and stack it with a really motivational playlist that will keep you focused on breathing and moving.

Holding On

This is especially true for treadmills and elliptical machines. Just because there’s a handrail, that doesn’t mean you should be holding on. For the most part, unless the grips are built into moving parts of the machine designed to help you get a better full-body workout, then you shouldn’t be holding them. They’re there to let you check your heart rate between intervals or to catch yourself should you lose your balance. They’re not there as a crutch to hold onto.

Averting Your Eyes

Most gyms have full mirrors on the walls. This isn’t just to let vane gym junkies check themselves out. It’s actually a service to you while you workout. Check your posture. Are you running with a swayback? Are you favoring one foot over the other? Even if you aren’t a big fan of looking at yourself in the mirror, check these things every now and then. As you correct them and focus on your workouts, you’ll find that you don’t mind what you see in the mirror so much anymore.

Turning A Fit Life Into A Paying Gig

Join Me!
I’ve been a Beachbody Coach for 2 years now. I LOVE it. Why? I LOVE knowing that my business is a direct reflection of what I put into it. Period! No boss, no hours, no office politics…oh, and I get paid to workout & eat well. It motivates me like nothing else. I am SO INCREDIBLY GRATEFUL to have a business where my growth potential is unlimited but my overhead is minuscule and will never really increases.

I know direct sales, network marketing, MLM companies or whatever you call them get a bad rap, but I am 100% convinced that this is one of the most brilliant business models ever conceived IF you find a company, like Beachbody, with integrity and great products. Why?

- No product development
- No shipping, ordering, storing products, or returns
- Minimal overhead
- Success is direct reflection of how much you help others succeed
- Work from home
- Get choose WHO you work with
- You get OUT what you put IN
- CEO authority over how you run your business

When I became a Beachbody Coach, I did it for fun. I wanted to pay it forward to other women who where struggling & needed help. My passion for the business side of things flourished quickly & before I knew it, I had gone from a Stay At Home Mom to a Work At Home Mom. In the last two years, I’ve met some amazing people and had some amazing experiences that I wouldn’t trade for anything. I wouldn’t trade this business for anything. I love it. Really love it. No, I don’t always feel like doing it. Yes, I do it any way.

BUT listen! You cannot build a full time or six-figure income in two years by treating a business like a hobby. Why does no one ever talk about this? You CAN build a six-figure income in an insanely short amount of time working from home & doing something that you love if:

1. You are disciplined. Not just in your own fitness journey but in your business journey. You have to show up every day as the CEO and make the hard decisions, push yourself way out of your comfort zone, and be willing to fail.

2. You see the big picture & are patient. This business is about relationships. It’s about serving others, not building your income. It takes time for people to catch on to what you’re doing, to want to participate, to see that YOU are committed to this. It will happen if you are disciplined, but it takes time.

3. You are willing to commit 100%. If you’re not sure about this whole “coaching” thing, how do you expect others to be 100% sure about walking along side of you in their journey? I struggled with this at first big time. I was so nervous about being judged that I practically apologized for being a Coach before I said anything else! I’ve come a long way in that department. :)

These things come naturally to some people and not to others. It doesn’t matter what comes naturally to you. It ONLY matters that you are willing to work on developing the skills you need to succeed consistently, every day. I don’t have the fastest growing business in the world because I’ve got two toddlers at home, but it’s growing steadily & set to out earn my old attorney gig this year. Seriously? Seriously. I literally have to pinch myself some days – it seems to good to be true.

If any of the following describes you:

• Have the itch to start your own business
• Have a desire to work on your own fitness journey (no matter if you have 100 pounds to lose or are a fitness professional) & share it with others
• Are willing to carve out 45 minutes to an Hour every day to make your dream a reality so that you can live a life you design
• Are willing to be uncomfortable, disciplined, and consistent

I would like to personally invite you to join me tonight on a live webinar at 6:30 pst, 7:30 mst, 8:30 cst, 9:30 est. I will be sharing my coaching story in greater detail & explaining more about what Beachbody Coaching is all about. Plug in this URL address 5-10 minutes before the webinar and tune in with me (you can listen and watch, but don’t worry we can’t see you)!

Find out more, no obligation, about what has been the biggest blessing, most fun venture, crazy amazing opportunity that has ever fallen into my lap!

Searching For Skinny Instead of Fit

Fit Feels So Much Better Than SkinnyMost girls are aware at a very young age that “skinny” is better than “fat.” I felt “fat” through my awkward years (I insist I was over weight, my mom says it was just a “stage”). As I entered my late teens I began a quest for that perfect skinny feeling. I gained and lost weight through out college and my early twenties. The weight loss was always achieved by counting calories, going hungry, and jogging as much as I could. I thought that was what I was supposed to do to stay healthy. I thought eventually it would make me feel confident in my own skin.

It never did.

By my mid-20’s, I accepted that “searching for skinny” was just a perpetual state of living for women. I assumed it would never feel good enough, comfortable enough, thin enough. The top photo in the collage above was at my wedding – I felt beautiful. The dress fit. If you had asked me, I probably would have said 5 more pounds less would have made me feel just right. Truth is, it probably wouldn’t have been “enough.”

The bottom left photo is 3 months post-partum with my second son, and just under the heaviest I’ve been in my life – 170ish pounds. After seeing that picture I decided it was time to get back to my skinny quest, and boy did I! I got my butt into gear, starting eating ONLY 1200 calories a day, doing cardio until I was blue in the face, and struggling with exhaustion, fatigue, hunger, and two babies. I lost weight and plateaued at the weight in the middle, bottom image. My pants still didn’t button, and I was far from comfortable in my skin. I accepted that my body would just be different after having kids because after 2 months at a plateau, I wasn’t seeing any changes.

Enter my friend (and now Beachbody Coach), Tiffany. We actually met on Facebook in a mommy support group. She invited me to join her online fitness support group and give P90X a try. I was incredibly bored with my cardio and figured I had nothing to lose. Let me tell you, I had NO expectation that it would change my body that much. During the 90 days of P90X I committed to:

1. Eating as clean as possible, sticking very close to a Paleo diet
2. Letting go of counting calories and recording every single bite I ate (oh this was scary and FREEING all at the same time)
3. Getting in all the workouts, no matter how much I had to modify them

As you can see, 90 days later my body was completely transformed. Guess what, the scale said I was only 3 pounds lighter! Yep, that’s ONLY 3 pound difference, AND (get this) about one size BIGGER than I was on my wedding day. Shocked, I realized that for the first time in my life I felt like it was “good enough” … in fact it was GREAT. I felt amazing in my clothes, cared less about what size was on the tag, and basically threw out my scale.

All those years, I was seeking FIT, not skinny. I didn’t know how to get there, or what it was called. Having been on the quest for both, let me tell you FIT is so much better and so much more FUN. It feels amazing and it’s always good ENOUGH.

3 Surprising Things Slowing Weight Loss

Is the scale stuck?

Is the scale stuck? Do you feel like you are doing everything right but not seeing the results that you want? It’s actually very common among women trying to lose weight. They are working hard and are focused, disciplined, and serious about their health, yet they aren’t seeing the results they want to see.

These are the top 3 reasons why ladies in my online support groups find themselves in a weight loss plateau.

Not Eating Enough

When you eat a clean, healthy diet, the body requires a surprisingly large amount of food. If you are obsessively counting calories so that you hit your calorie target, you may not be getting enough food to fuel weight loss. You should never drop below 1200 calories (NET) a day, but many of us should be well above that number for healthy weight loss. This is especially true if you are working out intensely. Take two weeks and increase your calorie intake by 200 HEALTHY calories a day and see what happens.

Sleep Deprivation

It doesn’t matter how perfect your diet is or how intense your workouts are, if you are sleep deprived your weight loss will stall. The body requires adequate sleep to function properly – that functionality includes weight loss. Lack of sleep also makes proper nutrition extremely difficult. I really don’t feel like a chicken breast and brussel sprouts when I’m running on 4 hours of sleep – I would rather have a cheese burger! If you’re a mom, this can be the most challenging part of losing weight. Do the best you can and at least be aware that it affects weight loss.

Lack of Weight Training

If you are nearing your goal weight and feel stuck, you may need to either lift heavier weights or START weight lifting. Strength training will not make you bulky. Women generally do not have enough testosterone to bulk up from lifting. It will build muscle mass, prevent injury, and keep you strong. Without weight lifting you’re going to have the same shape body even at a smaller size. To change the SHAPE of your body, you have to have weight lifting in your life. Think of it as a toner bicep taking away from post-baby belly fat.

Superwoman Has a House Keeper

Superwoman

Superwoman has a big responsibility, saving people (or the world) from bad guys. I bet her house is spick n’ span too. I bet her bills are paid on time. I bet her laundry isn’t piled up. I also bet she has a housekeeper.

I get asked a lot, “how do you do it all? You must be superwoman!” Answer is simple: I do not do it all. My husband works 70 to 80 hours a week. Theoretically, that leaves me with two kids (and growing one more), the bills, the yard, the house, the laundry, the groceries, the cooking, my business (!!!), me, and NOT my sanity. I cannot keep up with all of those things, let alone do them well.

I “outsource” every single thing that I can afford to outsource. Outsourcing is my favorite thing! It wasn’t always like that though. It was hard to admit I couldn’t do it all. When I became a stay at home mom I felt like it was my “job” to do EVERYTHING except bring home a paycheck. When I became a Beachbody Coach, there was a period where I was trying to keep up with everything and start a business. I realized quickly that would buy me a one-way ticket to crazy town. Then one day Chalene Johnson gave me permission to ask for help. I was taking her FREE 30 Day Push series online (highly recommend – check it out Here ) and she told me it would make me saner & more successful to get help with things that didn’t require my personal touch. LIGHT BULB.

For our family, that means we get help with the deep cleaning (every two weeks!), the yard, the laundry every other week, and Quickbooks for each of our business’s. I have my business to thank for being able to afford the cleaning & laundry. I also occasionally send my mom to the grocery store with my list, perk of living two blocks away from family but one day I’ll officially outsource this too. I can’t wait. This frees up an INSANE amount of time for me to be with my boys and husband, to work on my business, and most importantly to let go of the worry. I don’t have “clean the bathrooms” hanging over my head any more, and I don’t feel like a bad mom or wife by giving up control of these things. I feel freedom.

You may not be able financially afford to outsource house cleaning. However, chances are that there is something in your life that you can let go of doing either by asking someone for help or just by letting it go, period. Don’t wait any longer to go for it! Ask for help! Let go of something! You can’t do it all, it’s physically impossible. Once you accept this and free up your brain, you’ll start to excel at the things you love doing. Being fit and healthy will be so much easier.

Even Superwoman needs help with some things so that she can focus on saving the world.

There Is No Starting Over In Weight Loss

 whitney progress in weight loss
This progress picture was posted by one of the ladies in my support group a couple of weeks ago. With the picture she posted the following comment:

“I am so…I don’t know the word. I found this picture in my computer. I must say the picture in the left is the biggest I have ever been … from 2012. The one on the right was last weekend. So even when I feel like I’m not losing weight, and I have been feeling very down because I’m not where I want to be, I know I will get there. I truly am making great progress!” Whitney N.

Her post struck a cord with me. When a woman “starts” a weight loss journey, it’s about so much more than the scale or a clothing size. It’s easy to focus on those numbers because they are measurable and gauge progress. This journey is about so much MORE than those numbers though, and if we keep that in mind it gives us the perspective we need to keep going! Whitney gets that now and so it matters less that she isn’t where she imagined she would be a year ago. It matters more that she is making progress.

Healthy, lasting weight loss TAKES TIME. It doesn’t happen in a vacuum – life happens to us and around us while we are working towards a goal. Progress may seem non-existent some weeks or months, but you ARE moving in the right direction as long as you are trying. The scale may not move for one, two, three weeks, but mentally there are changes and adjustments happening that are important…critical actually. People give up because they don’t “feel” like they are where they should be, but that’s the exact moment when it’s time to dig deep and think about things other than the scale.

The real transformation happens internally, not just in how we feel about ourselves but in how we perceive the world around us. Our confidence levels, attitude, knowledge, energy levels, ect. are all transformed when we adopt a healthy lifestyle and lose weight.
Although we talk about “starting over” on Monday because we had a bad week, or “re-starting” a workout program that we stopped doing, it’s actually impossible to begin again from where we first started. Why? Because we’re different people now than we were a month, a year, a decade ago. We have new experiences, new knowledge, new muscle, ect. that will change our experience THIS time. So while we can start AGAIN, we can’t actually start over.

So no matter how far you have come, or how far you have to go, KEEP GOING. It doesn’t matter how bad last week was, it only matters that you learn from it and move forward making small adjustments to improve this week. You left the old you behind when you started this journey – so even if it was a year ago and you haven’t lost a single pound, SOMETHING is different. Embrace all of your progress, not just the number on the scale, and it will be so much easier to keep going…forever.

Thank you to Whitney N. for letting me use her progress pictures and for being an inspiration!
