Going From Fit To Fat – 10 Truths I Had Forgotten About Weight Loss

Going From Fit To Fat – 10 Truths I Had Forgotten About Weight Loss

pre baby

When you’re fit and living a fit & healthy life, you start to forget what it’s like to be at the beginning – out of shape, over weight, sad, in a hurry….  Sure, you can verbalize it and say all the right things, but the memory of the FEELING starts to fade until you can’t even really recall it any more.  Since having baby #3 and struggling to get back into shape and lose weight, I’ve been humbled a LOT.

Whether you have 25 pounds or 100 pounds to lose, I think most of these are true:

1.  It’s hard to remember every bite of food counts when you have such a long way to go.  Honestly, it seems like one biscuit or one cookie really isn’t going to make a huge difference at this point because I have so far to go.  Not logical at all, but still what I think (and they taste sooo good in the moment).

2.  Really getting into working out is near impossible because I can’t do most of the workout.  The awesome feeling of killing a workout is missing from my life right now because even though I have great intentions when I start, I get tired and lose momentum quickly.

3.  Fighting too small clothes all of the time is DEPRESSING.  I know, I know you’re going to say “You just had a baby!”  Well, not exactly “just” any more and even so it doesn’t change the feeling of not having anything to wear that I feel good in.

4.  Being over weight and out of shape makes me tired.  It’s much easier not to try during the day because I’m tired. I know that just perpetuates the cycle.  Knowing and changing…two very different things.

5.  Willpower is like a muscle.  I’ve not been good about working this muscle out.  It’s HARD to start at “will power zero” and build up to where I need to be to see progress.

6.   Bad food tastes good, especially when I’m tired.  I know bad food makes me more tired, yet I still find myself eating it.

7.   It truly is about choosing my “hard.”  This journey is HARD.  Giving up is hard too.  Being over weight is hard.  It’s all hard.

8.  Making small changes every day (taking those “baby steps”) feels futile.  I’ve given that advice thousands of times to people – “just take baby steps.”  What makes more sense to me now is a complete over haul because baby steps don’t yield results fast enough for me to want to keep going.

9.  The ol’ stand by “give it time!” is annoying!  I don’t want to give it time! I want to see some changes right now.  Actually, I want to see them yesterday.

10.   The mental dialogue is loud and proud.  “You’re too tired. You just had a baby. IT doesn’t matter right now.  Everything is more important than your weight loss. Today isn’t going to change anything.  This workout is too hard.  That cake is too good.”  Shew!  I need to change this big time.  One thought at a time.

Maybe some of these are true for you, maybe they aren’t.  All I know is that right now I want to eat the cake that’s in our freezer for a snack, but I’m going to fight the urge to use sugar for a quick energy source.

I will get there, and so will you.  You just have to promise yourself you won’t give up no matter how tough life is today or how long it takes or how many set backs you have.  This set back could be the start of a great come back.

Stop Being Intimidated!

Stop being intimidated

I’m a pretty big fan of at-home workouts. I used to be a gym goer but was so intimidated by the weight section that I NEVER went over there, like ever.  Even though I knew it would be good for me, I stayed away because I didn’t know where to start.   When I got into weight lifting at home I quickly realized that there really isn’t that much to be intimidated by – I wish I had just asked for some help years ago. It would have saved so much energy and time.

Maybe you love the gym (I, personally, will never go back to paying that monthly fee and having to commute to and from what was usually a pretty stinky place, lol), but you’re still hooked on cardio simply because you’re nervous about the weight section.  I want to encourage you to step OUT of your comfort zone and ask for help.  We are all beginners at some point; it’s ok to not know anything.  It’s ok to ask for help so you don’t injure yourself.   If you have to hire a personal trainer for a session or two to help you figure it out, then DO IT.  Trust me, you’ll waste more money in membership fees not getting the results you want if you don’t get help.

Don’t let being a beginner intimidate you. Own it. Work it. Then, you’ll lose it.

Fun Ways to Get Back into Shape after Baby

3 Fun Ways to Get your body back One of the things a new mom thinks after baby is arrives is “how am I gonna fit back into my clothes!” There are many things that affect the time and methods needed to get our bodies back like heredity, physical condition before pregnancy, and personal metabolism rate. All that aside (because really, SNOOZE), here are some easy ways ANY mom can use to start weight loss no matter how long ago baby arrived:

Friends. Get another mom friend and set goals together. Even if it’s just going for a walk a couple times a week, you with start to become more active with a little encouragement and accountability.

Snacking. Eating frequent, healthy snacks is crucial for all mothers, whether nursing or not. The body needs fuel to do all the activities associated with caring for baby, and frequent snacking can provide this fuel. The healthier the snacks, of course, the better. But frequency can also be key to boosting a sluggish metabolism and keeping energy levels high. Dancing. Babies love music and gentle movement, and you can dance your way into shape by soothing the new love of your life with dance moves. Choose slow and steady movements, mimicking the tenets of yoga, stretching gently. Any of these fun activities will help you towards your ultimate fitness goals with minimal effort. Once you feel comfortable with these things, you can take it up a notch by starting a workout program, meal planning, and accountability groups  Megean and the boys

8 Habits of the Super Healthy

8 habits of the super healthy

Wonder what it is exactly that your super fit friend does every day that is working for her? She’s actually doing many small things every day to keep herself on track. Try adding one or two of these habits a week, get the hang of them, and then add on. In no time you’ll be fitter, leaner, and healthier. Here 8 habits of the super healthy:

1. Change your attitude about exercise. It’s a privilege to have the ability to workout, and many do not have this privilege. Stay positive about your workouts and you’ll start to enjoy them more.
2. Keep your eye on the ball by setting very short-term goals like: workout 4 times this week, eat two healthy snacks today, etc.
3. Make a conscious effort to do a little bit more during every single workout.
4. On the days you don’t do a full fledged workout, do something active like walking or stretching to keep your body active.
5. Prep for your workout the night before. Lay out your shoes, workout clothes, and water/snack. Put the DVD in the TV or your purse by the door. People busier than you make time to workout. You can to it.
6. Get an accountability partner – not only will it help keep you on track, but you’ll love the feeling of being part of someone else’s journey.
7. Keep your routine fresh. Doing the same thing over and over is a recipe for quitting. Programs like Beachbody offers will change it up effectively so that you don’t get bored but still see results.
8. Keep in mind that portion control matters – even if you are only eating whole foods. Too many calories will stall progress and frustrate you!

Easy peasy lemon squeezy!

How to Motivate Yourself to Get Up and Workout in the Morning

How to Motivate Yourself to Get Up and Workout in the Morning

Getting up early to workout before heading off to run errands, go to work, and do everything else your life requires of you is hard. It can be even harder, though, to motivate yourself to workout when you get home from work. You may start your days off with every intention of hitting the gym or going for a run after you get off work. Then you get home and sit down for just a minute, but a minute becomes an hour. Then you need to make dinner. They have some take-home work to do. The kids need help with homework. Sound familiar?

Some people successfully make time to exercise after work, but it’s actually a lot harder to do than getting up in the morning and working out before you get your day started. Beginning the day with an energy-boosting workout is great for your productivity and demeanor, too. So how can you motivate yourself to get up and and workout in the morning?

Plan Ahead

Lay your clothes and gear out before you go to bed. I’ve known moms who actually sleep in their workouts clothes! Not necessary, but if you at least have your clothes and shoes sitting out by your bed, you’ll be able to sleep a few more minutes and not fumble around in the dark looking for socks. Once you’ve gotten changed into your workout clothes, and you have everything ready to go, there’s no excuse at all. Get moving!

No matter how well intentioned you are, “Just 5 more minutes” usually turns into 10, 15, 20, and more. Before you know it, you’ve slept through your workout time. When the alarm goes off, don’t let yourself doze off again. I put my alarm (my phone) in the bathroom so that when it goes off I have to actually get up out of bed to turn it off.

Think About How You’ll Feel When You’re Finished

No one LOVES getting up at 5:00 a.m., but what you will come to love is the feeling of accomplishment you have when you’ve already taken care of you before breakfast. Think about that feeling when you’re wiping the sleep from your eyes. Forget how you feel in that moment and focus on how you’ll feel when you’re finished.

After a three weeks of following these simple tips, you’ll be well on your way to forming a great morning workout habit. I promise it gets easier but you have to give it time to become a habit before giving up!

Find Healthy For You

Find Healthy for You

With Pinterest and social media today it’s easy to think that there are only two options: obesity or extreme fitness. Why aren’t there more images and examples of moms who want to fall somewhere in between those two extremes? What’s really important is finding healthy for you. Where do I fit into this as a mom who just wants to be healthy but not necessarily have 14% body fat?

I fit in here:

I don’t eat healthy foods because I want to be skinny, or because I’m attached to some ideological diet, or because I want to be better than someone else.

I eat healthy because I actually feel better when I do….yes, so much so that it’s usually not hard to turn down junk because I know how I’ll feel right after I eat it. Bloated, sinus drainage, groggy, bleh.

I’m not perfect. I eat processed junk and have to be reminded how yucky I feel when I do eat it. Some times it’s worth it.

I love feeling fit and strong. Skinny is not the goal.

I’m a better mom, wife, friend, daughter, sister, mentor when I take care of myself.

I don’t care about having a 6 pack as much as I care about having balance, feeling good in my clothes, and rocking some confidence.

I want to set a good example for my kids. They may not eat brussel sprouts now but maybe if they see me eating them for long enough, they will try them one day,

I share my journey with you because I believe that it’s OK to not want to be a body builder or fitness competitor with cut arms and a perfectly round booty (if that’s your goal though, hello awesome!). It’s ok to not be a size 2. It’s ok to just want to be healthy, have balance, and be you.

What to Expect from Shaun T & INSANITY®

Insanity Challenge Pack INcludesYou’ve probably seen those infomercials for INSANITY® – who hasn’t? The ads and the name really drives home the idea that these exercises are, well, insane. Before you get too intimidated, I’d like to tell you what to expect from Shaun T & Insanity by giving you a more beginner-friendly perspective on this body transforming, life-changing program.

What Makes These Workouts “Insane”?

The Max Interval Training structure of the workouts is what most people find crazy. Going against the norm, INSANITY® requires you to do intense and demanding workouts for longer intervals, take very short breaks, and then jump right back into another long interval of exercise.

This type of training is difficult to get used to, to say the least. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t take the workouts at your own pace. The point of these demanding intervals is to push your body to its limit and get the best results possible in the shortest amount of time. According to the Insanity website, people have burned as many as 1,000 calories in an hour by doing these extreme routines.

How Will You Feel?

You are going to feel the results from the program from day one. Your muscles will definitely feel sore, but each day focuses on a different muscle group, so you are able to continue. As with any workout, the longer you stick with the program, the more stamina, energy and endurance you will have.

Who Will Like this Program?

Even though it is extremely challenging, people consistently call INSANITY® one of their favourite workouts, if not the best. Is it because these people are insane?
